Competitors, including battery-powered sleds, wait their turns to run their sleds in the acceleration event during the 2008 SAE Clean Snowmobile Challenge, a competition among US and international universities to develop a prototype snowmobile that meets the 2012 standards for exhaust emissions and noise output. The Society of Automotive Engineers' ninth annual event culminated with an acceleration and handling competition held Saturday, March 15 at Keweenaw Research Center, just outside of Houghton, Mich. Unlike last year's competition that saw muddy track conditions, this year's competitors had just light snow flurries as well as excellent track conditions. the event was hosted by Michigan Technological University. No. 12 was an entry from McGill University, Montreal, Quebec.
