Fred Hedmark, of Hedmark's Maple Ridge, adds slab wood to the boiler that heats the maple sap evaporator. Hedmark held an open house Saturday, April 5, 2008 to introduce people to the process of making maple syrup. It takes about 40 gallons of sap to make one gallon of maple syrup. Most producers use wood to fire their boilers although fuel oil and propane are other fuel sources. Fred Hedmark is the 2008 president of the Wisconsin Maple Syrup Producers Association.
